Ethereum Name Service domains now supported on Coinbase

Press Release for Ethereum Name Service

Singapore, 10 April 2023 -- Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and Coinbase today announce a newly launched domain integration that expands global accessibility of a fiat on-ramp for new crypto users and simplifies crypto-based transactions.

Coinbase customers will now be provided with the option to use ENS usernames when sending, receiving or purchasing crypto. Crypto token payments can be made to a human-readable “cb.id” address rather than a hexadecimal address, reducing the likelihood of human error when typing out the recipient’s address to send funds.

The integration will also simplify the ENS domain registration process for Coinbase users. It is open to any user, who is free to create and use an unique (such as username.cb.id), user-friendly, decentralised identity via the Coinbase’s Wallet app. Registration for ENS usernames is free on the app. In addition, users will no longer need to hold cryptocurrencies in their Coinbase wallets during the domain registration process.

This integration is the first name service to become available on Coinbase.

“Through this integration, we are pleased to have taken a major step towards the onboarding of new users and easier access to cryptocurrencies,” said Nick Johnson, Founder and Lead Developer of ENS. “Users can now register a meaningful ENS username and start buying cryptocurrencies with fiat currency with lower barriers to entry.”

An ENS address can be used to send any of the 50+ cryptocurrencies supported by Coinbase Wallet, including Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin and USDC.

The move comes as ENS, which saw a record total of 649,000 domain purchases in January 2023, continues to be highly sought out by crypto users. Today, it is the most widely integrated blockchain naming standard, with 529 integrations with the likes of Trust Wallet and Blockchain Wallet, and ownership at an all-time high of 2.8 billion domains.
