At Amplify Health, our people are our most valuable asset. We believe that vibrant, unique individuals with values and expertise that reflect our ambition to make Asia healthier are the key to our success as an organisation. Welcome to #WeAreAmplifyHealth – a series that celebrates these outstanding people.

Kevin Wu is our Commercial Strategy Lead, and has enjoyed an exciting career in tech, data and AI, and healthcare consulting. It was Kevin’s experience as an Army medic deployed to West Africa and Central America that shaped his belief that everyone, regardless of where they are in the world, should have a basic right to quality healthcare.

As a Special Forces trauma medic in the 20th Special Forces Group, Kevin was stationed in rural communities served by only one or two general practitioners, providing care to people with chronic illnesses, upper respiratory infections and skin rashes. Kevin believes that technology has the power to scale the impact of healthcare delivery, and this makes him an excellent fit for Amplify Health.

“At Amplify Health, I feel like we have a tremendous opportunity to reconnect the fragmented parts of Asia’s healthcare systems. I am so excited to see our impact by using technology in a responsible way, to expand beyond the four walls of a hospital and reach patients where they are. Without seeing first-hand the importance of access to healthcare through my experience in the Army, I wouldn’t appreciate the importance of what we’re doing at Amplify Health, and I’m not sure I would have ever entered healthcare. We have an ambitious goal, but change has to start somewhere. This is a bit corny, but I am reminded (and inspired) when we do encounter obstacles by what President Barack Obama once said: ‘Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.’”

How does the intersection of behavioural science and decision-making play out in the healthcare context in Singapore and the rest of Asia?

Moray MacLennan, our Lead Digital Engagement Consultant from Amplify Health, had the pleasure of speaking with Dr Joanne Yoong in this episode.

Dr Yoong is an applied economist working at the intersection of behavioural economics, health and financial decision making, and the founder of Research For Impact.

“The Singapore health system is undergoing a radical transformation, moving from an episodic, acute-oriented system to a person-centric, preventive first system that is based on the community. This is a radical shift, and it requires a change in mindset from both healthcare providers and patients.”

Watch our highlights video for more of Dr Yoong’s insights on driving behavioural change to make the people and communities of Asia healthier.

At its best, integrated technology has tremendous potential to improve the healthcare outcomes of people all around the world. In contrast, fragmented technology and broken systems can widen gaps in healthcare and exacerbate inequalities that exist between men and women.

This #InternationalWomensDay, on the United Nations theme of DigitALL, innovation and technology for gender equality, we speak to four women from our Health Insights team to ask how they think data and technology can make women in Asia healthier.

“Women play a critical role in determining the health outcomes for their family and hold many responsibilities as primary caregivers and healthcare decision makers. Integrated healthcare technology has the potential to help women make quicker, better informed decisions about their own health and the health of those in their care.” - Michelle Loke, Senior Product Manager

“A lot of clinical research that has been conducted underrepresents women and minority groups, leading to gaps in treatment innovation and medical guidelines for these populations. There’s been so much progress, but there is still a lot more to go. As we innovate, all of us – of all gender identities – need to consciously think about how we create more inclusive solutions centered on what different people need at different points in their lives." - Janel Jin, Senior Strategy Health Consultant

“A key advantage of health technology today is its ability to provide personalised solutions relevant to an individual’s circumstances. The best design comes through listening to diverse voices - this means that women from all walks of life need a seat at the product development table in order to develop solutions for women like them.” - Lydia Williamson, Customer Success Lead

“Healthcare solutions shouldn’t be ‘one size fits all’. There has been significant growth in the global women’s health market size, contributed to mainly by female prevalent diseases. This is where precision health can advance things further - in combining data and clinical expertise, care can be tailored for each individual to an even deeper level." - Hwee Theng Yeo, Senior Data and Analytics Health Specialist

Meet Janel Jin, our Senior Strategy Health Consultant who drives product strategy and leads our data & analytics product solutions.

Janel joins the Amplify Health team from the world of health data and analytics, both from the tech and implementation side, and believes that how and what we measure in health is the most important step in transforming healthcare.

Beginning her career in research, Janel moved into policy and value-based care design at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) as part of the the Obama administration’s Affordable Care Act implementation. Janel led program data strategy and built data collection and feedback reporting tools for primary care payment reform initiatives.

One of Janel’s most memorable CMMI projects that she feels privileged to have worked on was shaping new analytical approaches for the identification of elderly patients with complex needs, such as frailty and dementia. As a public insurer, measuring patient risk and quality of care is difficult because of limitations in claims data and and inaccessibility of clinical outcomes.

However, identification and risk segmentation are important in value-based payment models. They help primary care clinics more effectively support patients and families with the greatest needs, at the right time. Although small steps within a much bigger program, these innovative analytical approaches helped strengthen support for primary care doctors, and the initiative impacted millions of Medicare beneficiaries.

“At its fullest potential, healthcare data can unlock the most daunting challenges facing the industry and individuals today. One of the most significant challenges facing healthcare companies is ethically using the data that has been generated. There’s an amazing opportunity for real innovation to create a future that is better for everyone, and we can’t afford to get it wrong. I feel excited to be at a company that is addressing some of the core problems inherent in the healthcare system, with a focus on Asia.”

Lights, camera, action!

Last week, we kicked off the first episode in our #AmplifyHealthUnplugged Thought Leadership series, hosted by our CEO Jonathan Broomberg. Amplify Health Unplugged is a platform for leaders in healthcare to connect and get candid about the trends, ideas and issues impacting their industry.

We were pleased to be joined by Jeremy Lim as our inaugural guest speaker. Jeremy is CEO & co-founder of AMILI, the region's first and only gut microbiome company headquartered in Singapore.

Jeremy shared his thought provoking views on Asia’s digital healthcare landscape and the emerging relationships between genomics, the biotech industry and health insurers.

Stay tuned for our highlights video in the days to come. In the meantime, we’ll leave you with this nugget of wisdom from Jeremy:

“Countries where digital health therapeutics will really take off, are countries that are pragmatic and realistic enough to know they must compare the digital alternative with what is truly happening in clinics on the ground.”
